DPF

What is Meant By A DPF?

A DPF is essentially a Diesel Particulate Filter. It is also called FAP in the case of certain French vehicles. Typically, it refers to a device that gets fitted onto the exhaust of diesel vehicles to curtail emissions and adhere to emission standards in Europe. The device works by trapping particulate matter such as soot emitted from the exhaust gas and then allowing the gases to flow out of the system. Since the DPF filters so much debris on a regular basis, it needs to be cleaned regularly. Most times, the DPF will be cleaned by a process called regeneration which combines burning soot gas to extreme temperatures and a catalyst, which creates a residue of ash inside the DPF.

Typical Issues with a DPF

In some vehicles regeneration occurs automatically. However, in certain instances, there may be issues with the process. With a sub-optimal regeneration process, it could impact fuel economy and overall vehicle performance as well. If DPF regeneration fails, the DPF can become clogged, which results in extensive damage to remaining engine components. The result is highly expensive repairs.

Why You Need DPF Replacement

DPF issues, if left, can result in severe issues inside the engine. Sometimes, the blockage inside the DPF can result in overheating the exhaust, also increasing the risk of fire. To stop this damage, many vehicles will automatically enter what is called a “Limp mode”. This means the vehicle is equipped with just enough power in order to drive home. This is why DPF removal / replacement is critical because it eliminates the risk of jeopardizing your engine’s other components.
